Commission to investigate record labels that are failing to compensate artists fairly

A commission of inquiry is to be set up to investigate allegations that record labels are failing to compensate artists fairly, the Department of Trade and Industry said yesterday.

Speaking at a launch in Boksburg yesterday, Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Thandi Tobias-Pokolo said the commission would be an independent body that would be chaired by a high-ranking judge.
The commission will force record companies to address the issue of royalties. Artists within the multi million-rand music industry have increasingly complained of a lack of transparency at record companies. Reports of prominent artists dying in poverty - partly as they were not properly compensated by record labels - have also been widespread. Nick Motsatse, CEO of the Southern African Music Organisation, welcomed news of the commission yesterday.
